Grossglockner High Alpine Road

The high mountains and the Grossglockner: What was once reserved for experienced mountaineers only has been an experience for young and old since the construction of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, which has enjoyed unbroken enthusiasm and fascination. Much has changed since the opening of the Alpine Road in 1935. The road has become wider, safer and more comfortable. Exhibitions and museums, huts and mountain inns, visitor centres and information points bring the diverse mountain world with its fauna & flora in the middle of the Hohe Tauern National Park into focus. The mountain road blends harmoniously into the landscape, enables a unique mountain experience - and has been providing incomparable driving pleasure over 48 kilometres for more than 80 years.

The walk is a mystical and amazing experience for young and old.

GIANT ICE WORLD

The Eisriesenwelt is a cave labyrinth with a total length of over 40 kilometres. The formation took place over a very long period of time. The first crevices and fissures in the limestone rock were already formed during the mountain uplift about 100 million years ago. Through chemical dissolution processes and water erosion over thousands of years, the underground crevasses increased in size and large cavities were formed. The caves in the Alps are still in a process of development today, although many cave systems - including large parts of the giant ice world - are no longer developing significantly due to dehydration.
